During Shop Maryland Week, qualifying clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less will be exempt from Maryland’s 6 percent sales tax. Click here for more information.

During the Hot Weather Marylanders are Urged to Take Steps to Stay Cool

Cooling Centers have been open throughout the State and provide an option for those who need a cool place to stay during the day. Heatstroke and heat exhaustion can easily develop from the hot and humid conditions typically associated with Maryland summers.

To learn more about preventing heat related illness visit Governor O'Malley's Blog with Links to local Cooling Center information or visit MEMA and click on Other Natural Disasters.

The impact of Recovery Act funds on Marylands seniors

More than $1.5 million in Recovery Act funds administered by the Maryland Department of Agings nutrition program is being used to eliminate waiting lists for home-delivered meals, create new congregate meal sites in unserved communities, provide shelf stable meals for use during emergencies, and to create jobs for people who work in the program and in the businesses that provide food services to the program. A short video produced by Maryland Public Television shows the impact of the Recovery Act funds on Maryland seniors.

Help to Weatherize Your Home

The Weatherization Assistance Program WAP operated by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Developments Single Family Special Loans Program, helps eligible low income homeowners with the installation of energy-conserving materials. Priority is given to those homeowners who are elderly, disabled, have families with children, and/or have the highest energy consumption. Eligible renters may also apply. Examples of improvements include: health and safety items, hot water system, lighting retrofit, insulation and furnace cleaning. If interested, apply at your local weatherization agency or directly through the Maryland Energy Assistance Program at 1-800-352-1446. For more information call 1-800-638-7781 or contact Jim McAteer at mcateer@mdhousing.org.
